We are very proud to announce that Prof.dr. Elise Van Nederveen Meerkerk, SOCION board member and SCOOP fellow, has been awarded a VICI grant by NWO (Dutch Research Council) for her project "Care and Coercion. Patriarchy, (Forced) Labour and Caregiving in the Household in the Dutch Empire, c. 1750-Present".
The project focuses on (former) Dutch colonies: Indonesia, Suriname, and South Africa. In Elise's words, her project "highlights the historical role of gender and ethnicity on power relations within the household in the former Dutch colonies. By doing so, we gain a deeper understanding of unequal labour relations based on sex and skin colour in our current postcolonial society.”
