Janine's dissertation, Identity Signaling and Sustainable Cooperation focuses on how people decide whether someone is trustworthy, especially when they do not know that person well. Trust is an important part of cooperation, but it can be difficult to know whether someone will act in a trustworthy way. Her research looked at identity signals, characteristics that give information about who someone is, such as a group they belong to, as well as signals of previous positive behavior. The results show that trust is initially influenced by prosocial signals, (e.g. donating to charity), and at a later stage by identity signals. After a trust violation, people's actual subsequent behavior became the most important factor in rebuilding trust.
