Congratulations to the SCOOP Board members, Rafael Wittek, Bas van Bavel, Naomi Ellemers, Martin van Hees, Tanja van der Lippe, and Russell Spears for their new theory brief, “Understanding sustainable cooperation” (open access, Theory and Society).
In this article, Rafael and his colleagues argue that although there is a good understanding of how cooperation emerges, scholars are less able to recognise why cooperation breaks down, or what makes it sustainable over time.
The authors suggest that in order to solve the problem of sustainable cooperation, analyses need to bridge the gap between the micro-level approaches that focus on individuals apart from their context, and macro-level approaches which focus on institutions but lack an individualised perspective. Rather, the authors are interested in the dynamic between individuals and institutions, and how these interactions affect the sustainability of communities, families, and organizations over time.
